What is the Holy trinity?
The catholic church believes that the Holy Trinity is the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit as one God.
Matthew 11:27 " All things have been handed over to me by my father; and no one knows the son except the father, and no one knows the father except the son and anyone whom the son chooses to reveal him. The catholic church believes in the three divine beings that make up the trinity, the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. We begin our prayer in the name of the trinity to symbolize that Christ is with us when we pray. |
The maning of the number three
The number three is a divine number in many different cultures around the world, not just the catholic church.
For example the Greek Pythagorean's taught us that three is a true number because it is the first number to form a geometrical figure... the Triangle.

Also a story that is common in many Western families is the Tale of the three little pigs. A story that is told to children to entertain and signifies the strength of an individual who protects others against a 'force of evil'. Other common stories involve Goldilocks and the three little bears, three billy goats gruff, Aladdin (three wishes)
In Babylon the religion that surfaced there had three gods, one for Heaven Earth and the Abyss.
Similar to this was the Egyptian culture which followed three aspects of the sun God: Khepri; Re; Atum.
Even in old Elizabethan culture William Shakespeare s Macbeth featured three witches who create prophecies.
In Ireland a major symbol is the three leafed clover, which Saint Patrick used to explain the concept of the Holy Trinity.
In Japan the three wise monkeys are understood to mean: Hear no evil, See no evil, Speak no evil.

Christians are baptized "in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit". Before receiving the sacrament, they respond to a three-part question when asked to confess the Father, the Son and the Spirit: "I do." "The faith of all Christians rests on the Trinity."
The Catechism shows us that the Trinity is central to Catholic faith, everything we do is because of faith in the trinity. Prayer, baptism and the sacraments are all parts of the Catholic faith that are based around and upon the Trinity highlighting the importance of it as a part of the Catholic faith.

As teenagers who are a part of the Catholic church it is important for us to be able to understand the meaning and weight that the Trinity carries with it. The Holy Trinity and every part of it influence us, We pray through Christ to the Father, who forgives us our everyday sins. And the Holy Spirit is always a part of us, influencing our decisions and beliefs and leading us to the right path. Believing in the Trinity as a teenager is like having someone who's got your back, with you during these times when we are going through obstacles every day as part of being a teenager at high school. Through the obstacles we might be facing in school, sport friends and family it is a reassurance to have the Trinity to believe and pray in.
The Trinity also helps us to improve our relationship with others in our community by observing and reflecting on the relationship between the Father, Christ, and the Holy Spirit.

Andrei Rublev's icon:
Rublevs icon is a portrayal of Abraham's conversation with the three divine beings of the holy trinity. Each part of the Trinity is painted and dressed as would befit the symbols, prayers and beliefs that surround them. This is important because it shows all three divine beings acting as one, the three angels represent the trinity as the three divine aspects of God.
The Father is painted as wearing a robe with all changing colors and light images. This is befitting because the Father has never been seen in any form on Earth.
The Holy Spirit is dressed in blue, this could be seen as a representation of the symbol water which represents the Holy Spirit.
And the Son is dressed in a reddish brown and the sky blue that represents Heaven. Because of this it becomes evident that Christ is the manifestation of Heaven on Earth
